GOAL AND PURPOSE OF PHEDEC
Peoples Health & Economic Development Center PHEDEC is dedicated to providing solace to the less privileged in rural areas in Nigeria.
Peoples Health & Economic Development Center PHEDEC is a non-government, not for profit making Community Based Organization dedicated to providing solace to the less privileged in rural areas in Nigeria through promotion of health, education, child right/gender equality, Good Governance Women/Youth Rights and eradication of poverty. PHEDEC was officially formed in 2004 though it started its activities on Gender Equality / Child Right Protection in 2001. PHEDEC acquired its first legal identity by registering with the Ngor/Okpala Local Government Area council of Imo State, Nigeria on 16th April 2007 with registration number NOLG/SW/1.305. In February 2012, PHEDEC got fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, Abuja Nigeria with registration number as CAC/IT/N0. 50700 and also with Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in March 25th, 2015 with registration number: 0074
The world is indeed tremendously endowed with natural resources that can keep people afloat in wealth and prosperity. Yet, half the world lives on less than two dollars a day, nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. One in two children in the world lacks the basic necessities of life. 10.6 million Children died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5 (roughly 29,000 children per day). Today the narrative has insignificant change. Extremely, poverty majorly fueled by bad governance has become an intractable global problem. Irked by the aforementioned;
PHEDEC was born to be an instrument of solace to victims in Imo State, Nigeria and the world at large. Poverty and ignorance lead to prostitution and immorality which in turn give birth to HIV/AIDS pandemic and other social vices which increased the burden of OVC in Imo State. Presently, only few services to Vulnerable Children (VC) are going on in Imo State through the Imo State Government and few donor agencies which are yet to make the required impact on the lives of those children.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF PHEDEC:
Touched by the above issue, PHEDEC focused majorly on the following objectives:
* To help in providing medical care for the less privileged.
* To be at the forefront in combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Imo State through proper testing and complete referral.
* To train the needy on Income Generating Activities (IGA), Business Skills Development (BSD) and link them to small scale loans for improved standard of living.
* To help in achieving the Millennium Development Goal number two which is to provide Universal Primary Education to every child?
* To be at the forefront of promoting Child Right and Gender Equality from the community to the national level in Nigeria and beyond.
* To Promote Women / Youth Rights and participation in governance.
* To promote good governance and combat corruption in the Local, State and Federal level through Elections Monitoring, Budgets and Budgetary Controls and Performance Assessment of public office holders.
PHEDEC ACHIEVES THESE OBJECTIVES THROUGH:
* Engagement of volunteers from communities where our
Projects are implemented.
* Involvement of gatekeepers and stakeholders at all level of our
project implementation.
* Economic empowerment of the less privileged in rural
communities.
* Engagement of consultants and collaborating with skill –
Acquisition Centers to provide trainings to young people.
* Training Caregivers on Income Generating Activities (IGA)
and on Business Skills Development (BSD)
* Provision of small scale loans to trained caregivers.
* Increasing education opportunities for the less privileged and
Improving the quality of education in rural communities.
* Raising awareness of the rural communities on the dangers of
global diseases especially HIV/AIDS and malaria and
educating them on health matters.
* Inculcating savings culture through the formation of Village
Savings and Contribution Association (VSCA) and Village
Savings and Loans Association (VSLA)

ARMS OF PHEDEC
PRINCIPAL SOURCES OF FUNDING:
Prior to our execution of the Children of Hope (CH) Project, PHEDEC was totally funded with donations from members and concerned citizens.
PHEDEC have received funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for the implementation of Children of Hope Project in Nigeria from 2009 – 2011.
Health
Promotes access to quality healthcare, health education, disease prevention, maternal and child health, and improved wellbeing in communities.
Education
Supports access to quality education, encourages literacy and skills development, and helps children, youths, and adults gain knowledge and practical skills.
Economic Empowerment / Micro Projects:
Helps individuals and vulnerable communities become financially independent through skills training, small businesses, entrepreneurship, grants, and income-generating projects.
Gender Equality / Child Rights Protection
Promotes equal opportunities for women and men, protects children from abuse, exploitation, violence, and discrimination, and advocates for their rights and welfare.
Anti-Corruption and Good Governance:
Promotes transparency, accountability, responsible leadership, and citizens' participation in decision-making while raising awareness against corruption and misuse of public resources.

ARMS OF PHEDEC
HEALTH
PHEDEC is dedicated to Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 which aims at reducing by two third the mortality rate among children under five by 2015 compared to 1990 and also reducing by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio by 2015 compared to 1990. Every human being irrespective of race has a right to good health, but one third of the world population is denied this right yearly. It is estimated that 10 million infants die of preventable diseases, 500,000 women die during pregnancy and child birth due to low access to sufficient medical care in developing countries. PHEDEC in this regard, focuses on renovation of dilapidated health centers/construction of new ones, provision of health center equipments, advocacy on health reforms, execution of micro projects like sinking of boreholes and construction of water system toilets for rural communities/schools. PHEDEC also creates awareness on the dangers of global diseases like HIV/AIDS, GBV/Gender issues, malaria and also involves in prevention implementation using the National Prevention Plan as a guide.
EDUCATION
The Millennium Development Goal number 2 is geared towards achieving Universal Primary Education for every child. The UN convention on the rights of the children includes the right to education. In the year 2000, about 104 million children had no access to education, and 60% of the people are women in development countries. What PHEDEC do in this respect fall within construction and reconstruction of schools, building of schools desks, provision of school uniforms, purchase of educational materials, and child/teacher performance assessment. We also use some of the above services to secure Institutional Arrangements from state and Local Governments through which all forms of levies are waived for the children.
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
PHEDEC believes that the best way to fight poverty is by giving Economic Strengthening to rural communities. We do this through the following:
* Creating awareness on food security which emphasis on
availability, affordability and usability of local food stuffs.:
* Mobilizing communities into aggressive and meaningful
agricultural activities and helping to establish processing plants
for agricultural products.:
* Provision of trainings on VST, IGA, BSD and linking community
groups to sources of small scale loans.:
* Provision of Skill Acquisition as a means of empowerment to
youths.
GENDER EQUALITY / CHILD RIGHT PROTECTION:
PHEDEC promotes awareness on abolition of harmful widow and
Widowhood practices in communities, and provision of equal education opportunities for both the male and female children.
Our Child Right Protection focuses attention on:
* Child Birth Registration and provision of National Birth
certificates
* Universal Basic Education for every child.
* Introducing parents and communities to the art of writing WILLs
and SUCCESSION PLANs for their children.
* Combating child abuse and Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Communities
ANTI CORRUPTION, ACCOUNTABILITY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE
PHEDEC is dedicated to free and fair elections which we seriously
Support through Election/Transition monitoring. We also embark on budgets and budget controls for governments and public offices. As a way of promoting good governance, we embark on Performance Assessment of public office holders and publication of results on local, state and National newspapers / magazines.
PHEDEC believes that poverty can drive people into negative behavior in politics. Politicians are very aware of this and cash in on it to buy votes from the masses to the detriment of their future. PHEDEC therefore under our various projects sponsored by the USAID and CDC embarked on Household Economic Strengthening in the communities we work to alleviate poverty and allow people take decisions not driven by poverty in choosing and voting people into positions of leadership.
To achieve the above, PHEDEC has established 43 Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) in Nine Local Government Area of Imo State with total membership of 1075. So far 775 members have received loans from their groups for choice businesses which have in no small measure improved the economic status of those households. Through our sensitization, many have realized the negative effects of selling their votes or allowing politicians to rob them their mandate.
Also, on Women rights in politics, PHEDEC embark on the following:
1. Increasingly/Expanding the thinking spaces for women rights and Civil society organizations.
2. Shifting and redefining social norms to tackle gender inequality.
3. Enabling a strong and sustained women’s movement that sick to promote and expand transformative and intersectional approach to decision making and leadership.
To achieve the above we carry out the following activities:
(a) Building women’s political leadership capacity.
(b) Creation of Training materials
(c) Mentorship programme to party women, youth groups, networks with long entry of advocacy and feminist movements.
(d) Leveraging on governing powers for norms change using media and strategic partners.
(e) Bolstering Feminist movement building through engaging feminist / CBOs at the grassroots.
(f) Expanding spaces / rooms for women in local and National politics in Nigeria.
